Tip Calculator

Calculate a tip at your chosen rate and split the total bill into exact cent amounts that add up to the total.

Calculate a tip and split the total

Use the amount you want to tip on. No taxes or service charges are added.

0–100%. Enter 0 for no tip.

Enter 1 if you're paying alone.

Splitting, limits and rounding

The tip is rounded to cents, with half a cent rounded up, then added to the bill. The total is split into whole cents. The first people each pay one extra cent until the total is covered.

Bill: 0–1,000,000,000,000 USD, up to 2 decimal places. Rate: 0–100%, up to 6 decimal places. People: whole numbers from 1 to 1,000. Use decimal points without commas or currency symbols.

Check the receipt for any service charge already included. You choose both the tip rate and the bill used as its base; this tool does not apply tax rules or recommend a rate.

Enter the bill, your rate and the number of people

Use Bill amount for the amount on which you want to calculate the tip. Enter your chosen Tip rate, including 0 for no tip, and a whole number of People. Enter 1 if you are paying alone. Select Calculate to see the tip, grand total and payment per person.

The calculator adds no taxes or service charges. Check the receipt for charges already included and choose the bill amount accordingly. It applies your chosen rate to exactly the amount entered; it does not decide whether that base should include tax or recommend a tipping rate.

All fields start blank. Try example fills a $100 bill, a 20% rate and 3 people without calculating. This rate is an arithmetic example. Reset clears the form, and editing an input removes the old result.

Tip formula and cent rounding

Tip = bill × tip rate ÷ 100

A percentage expresses a fraction of 100; NIST defines the percent symbol as 0.01. This calculator rounds the tip to cents, with half a cent rounded up, then adds that rounded tip to the bill.

For a $100 bill and a 20% tip, 100 × 20 ÷ 100 = 20. The total is $120, and splitting it among 3 people gives $40 each.

For a $0.05 bill and a 10% rate, the unrounded tip is $0.005. The tip rounds up to $0.01, so the total is $0.06.

Why people can pay one cent apart

Dividing a total evenly can leave a fraction of a cent. Each person starts with the same whole-cent share. Person 1 then pays the first extra cent, person 2 the next, and so on until the remainder is covered. You can agree who takes those positions.

Bill Tip rate People Tip Total Payments
$100.00 20% 3 $20.00 $120.00 $40.00 each
$100.00 0% 3 $0.00 $100.00 $33.34, $33.33, $33.33
$0.02 0% 3 $0.00 $0.02 $0.01, $0.01, $0.00

Each person’s share differs from another’s by no more than one cent, and the shares add up to the displayed total. The calculator splits the entire bill equally; it does not allocate individual menu items or different tip rates to each person.

Limits and assumptions

Bills can be from 0 to 1,000,000,000,000 USD, with up to two decimal places. Rates can be from 0% to 100%, with up to six decimal places. The number of people must be a whole number from 1 to 1,000. Use decimal points without commas or currency symbols.

The calculation uses cents in USD and is intended for an estimate you can check against the receipt. Cash-payment rounding, currency conversion, tax rules and venue-specific service charges are not applied. For a standalone percentage amount, use the Percentage Calculator.
